Feeling Salty: Why salt is not your enemy.

Okay, so hear me out, salt is not the enemy. I hear over and over people saying “no salt please!”, well this may not be the best option. Yes, a low salt diet is said to be best, but do you know about the immense benefits of Pink Himalayan salt? I have swapped all the old boring and basic stuff in my house with this beautiful, rose colored goodness.

Why is your regular boring and basic table salt so bad? Regular, table salt is completely stripped of most of it’s minerals with the exception of sodium and chloride. It is then bleached, cleaned with chemicals and then heated at searing temperatures. Then synthetic iodine is added and our bodies have no idea what to do with it. It is then treated with more synthetic nasties such as anti-caking agents, which prevents it from dissolving in water and in the container. These nasties ALSO prevent it from absorbing in our own bodies, which leads to a build up in the organs. This is what causes all those lovely health problems.

However, let’s first take a look at the below quote from this week’s New York Times article on salt consumption in general and how what we know may not actually be correct. Then, we will dive into the amazingness of Pink Himalayan salt and my favorite brands.

If you eat a lot of salt — sodium chloride — you will become thirsty and drink water, diluting your blood enough to maintain the proper concentration of sodium. Ultimately you will excrete much of the excess salt and water in urine. The theory is intuitive and simple. And it may be completely wrong. New studies of Russian cosmonauts, held in isolation to simulate space travel, show that eating more salt made them less thirsty but somehow hungrier. Subsequent experiments found that mice burned more calories when they got more salt, eating 25 percent more just to maintain their weight.
