It’s safe to say everyone loves sage. It’s the must when moving in to a new place, or just to clear any heavy air. But what if you live in an apartment with super sensitive smoke alarms? I’ll admit I’ve set off that horrible screeching sound from a good vibe cleansing before. Not fun.
But a newish product has changed the way I clear out the bad juju in my house. Sage & Salt’s Smokeless Smudge is sage in a bottle. And it’s brilliant. A potent blend of sage and palo santo—among other delicious secret ingredients—combined with witchy goodness, it clears out any negative energy or bad moods in a spritz. I use it at least once a week because hi, I’m a moody writer. And bonus: It doesn’t bother my pup, Beanie, at all. (Anything smoking does.) Did I mention it smells delicious?
Created by witch extraordinaire Corbin Chamberlin, the spray has been a family recipe handed down to him. Corbin’s also a fashion writer so his discerning eye explains why the packaging of the spray is so good.
I spoke with the ultra fabulous, caftan-wearing witch (he’s so dreamy it hurts) about why his sage spray is a must for everyone, even if you’re a muggle like me.
Without giving any proprietary details away, what makes your spray so special?
It honestly all starts with great intention. I’ve hired an amazing team of witches who are magical and give off positive intention for our products. We also make sure to only use responsibly harvested ingredients too. The recipe has been in my family for a few generations— but I’ve tweaked it here and there.
How do you use it?
Before you ever start smudging any space, you want to make sure that you’re grounded and thinking clearly. This isn’t something you should rush. Clear your mind and create intent on smudging out energies that don’t serve you, proceed to spritz around your space— it helps if you speak some kind of mantra while smudging.
Will it get rid of ghosts, bad juju, and bad moods?
I have a few witchy friends that swear by the Smokeless Smudge removing unwanted spirits— but the Smudge is really just a vessel of your own intention and magic. I find that it instantly clears out funk from rude people or bad juju doesn’t stand a chance. I Smudge my hotel rooms whenever I travel and sometimes even the occasional haunted cab.
Do you have a ritual you recommend people do with this? Like at full moons perhaps?
Absolutely. Start by playing some of your favorite upbeat music and get yourself in the mood to purge negative vibes. I like to really blast my music during any kind of smudging ritual to help break up some of the stubborn energy. Put on jewelry, crystal, etc that empower you or make you happy. Go around your space and start to spritz while saying some kind of mantra or prayer. I follow up by lighting a white candle, burning some incense and meditating on positive things in my life and how I want those energies to fill my home.
Is it safe around animals?
Yes! You wouldn’t want to directly spray it on your pet, but I have lots of customers who spritz the Smokeless Smudge on their collars here and there. Lots of times burning sage or any kind of smoke really aggravates animals breathing. This is a great alternative to the traditional smudging method.
What inspired you to make it?
I was constantly finding myself in these spaces like hotel rooms, offices and other small nooks with smoke alarms that desperately needed to be smudged— bad energy really bothers me— and wasn’t able to. I initially created the Smokeless Smudge for myself and some witchy sisters, but it quickly grew in demand so I started Sage & Salt.
What’s next for the brand?
There’s such a need for positive vibes in the world right now that I’m just trying to keep up! Looking forward, we’re working on a line of candles that mimic some of our other products like the Smokeless Smudge. I really want to keep on perfecting what we have and help folks establish positivity in their own lives.
