I know we have lightly delved into the wonderful world of adaptogens. What we have not yet discussed is how many of them are out there and all the different benefits each one has.
Want to have more energy (duh! Who doesn’t? Especially, if you like me, live in an urban city and are stretching yourself to the limits), better digestion and skin that holds up to environmental stressors (again, duh!)? If you are shaking your head in agreement to any of these, then you may want to read on and learn about schisandra, a type of medicinal berry with a sh*t ton of healing benefits and has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years.
Most people know about this little power berry for its liver function boosting benefits but it does a heck of a lot more than that!
As an adaptogen, Schisandra is a potent general tonic, decreasing fatigue, enhancing physical performance, and promoting endurance. The berry counters stress by reducing the levels of stress hormones in the blood. Additionally, Schisandra offers great benefits for athletes.
Other uses for schisandra include treatment of high cholesterol, coughs, asthma, sleep problems (insomnia), nerve pain, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), chronic diarrhea, dysentery, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, involuntary discharge of semen, thirst, erectile dysfunction (ED), physical exhaustion. It really is a multi-tasker.
This little superhero is super simple to incorporate into your sweeter drinks. It has a tart flavor, think unsweetened cranberry juice so this works wonderful in your smoothies, sprinkled on oatmeal, but my favorite way is to add this to hibiscus tea. The flavors are very complimentary. However, let me put a disclaimer on this, I do like the tart flavor so if you do not, add some agave in there to sweeten it up, or even some nut milk and tocos! Yum!
Going to try it? Want to order? I picked mine up from Moon Juice, but there are lots of places. Google away people, google away.
